Detroit Lions' Sam Martin still wants to work out with Johnny Hekker

The top two punters in the NFL might be combining forces to make each other even better.

Detroit Lions punter Sam Martin said at the Taste of the Lions charity event Wednesday that he still intends to spend some time working out with the Los Angeles Rams' Johnny Hekker this summer.

Hekker and Martin finished 1-2 in the NFL in net punting average last year, with Hekker (46.0 yard net) edging Martin (44.2) for the NFC Pro Bowl spot.

"I think were similar in the sense of having the ability to do different types of things, but hes been doing different types of things for a little longer so thats kind of where I want to pick his brain," Martin said. "Hes just a cool dude. We got along well and I think getting together would be fun and wed benefit from it."

Martin and Hekker spent time together in Orlando at the Pro Bowl in January, when Martin attended as a guest of Lions kicker Matt Prater.

As an Aussie-style kicker, Hekker has a different approach to punting than most of Martin's peers. He drops the ball vertically towards his foot, and excels at kicking line-drive punts that challenge return men to move when they field the ball.

Last season, Hekker set NFL records for net average and punts inside the 20 (51).
