Jaylen Samuels ready to play multiple positions for Steelers

Jaylen SamuelsA had just about the weirdest stat line you'll ever see out of a college prospect. He had almost as many rushing attempts at NC State as he did receptions despite often lining up at tight end. How many tight ends in the NFL even take a single rushing attempt, much less come close to matching their receiving totals? But Samuels isn't a typical tight end. He's not even a tight end at all, because he moved around so much in college that designating him as any one position would be an incomplete assessment. Samuels played tight end. And wide receiver. And running back. And fullback. And special teams. Samuels exists beyond designation.

He is an offensive weapon, with no position required. When the NFL Draft rolled around, 31 teams looked at him and judged him for what he wasn't, a typical player at a typical position. Samuels felt disrespected by that according toA Jeremy FowlerA ofA ESPN, but that isn't exactly new, as he said "Ia€™ve always been underestimated all my life.a€ The Steelers, on the other hand, focused on what he actually can do. A little bit of everything, and players like that are rare. Samuels told Teresa Varley ofA Steelers.comA that the team is already experimenting with the different ways they can get him onto the field, sayingA "They have me in the backfield, running the ball, in the slot, moving around. Playing outside receiver. Pretty much what I was doing in college. Finding ways to get me the ball. I am up for the task and ready to get to work."
