The Kansas City Chiefs will be hiring David Merritt as their new defensive backs coach, according to a report from Field Yates of ESPN. Merritt will be reuniting with new Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, whom he worked with twice while with the New York Giants.

Merritt, 47, began coaching in 1997 after a three-year NFL career as a linebacker with the Dolphins and Cardinals. After spending time as an outside linebackers coach with Tennessee-Chattanooga in 1997 and as a defensive line coach and outside linebackers coach with the Virginia Military Institute from 1998 to 2000, Merritt gained his first NFL coaching job with the New York Jets as a defensive assistant and linebackers coach in 2001. He went on to serve a long stint with the New York Giants, first as a defensive assistant/quality control coach in 2004, then took over as the secondary/safeties coach from 2006 to 2017. Merritt was most recently with the Arizona Cardinals as a defensive backs coach in 2018, then was announced as the assistant defensive line coach in Jacksonville in January but now appears to be joining the staff in Kansas City instead.

Merritt is the first defensive hiring reported under Spagnuolo, who was named the defensive coordinator in January after the Chiefs fired Bob Sutton. Spagnuolo was the defensive coordinator in New York in 2007 and 2008, during which he won a Super Bowl ring when the Giants shut down the previously undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, then returned for a second stint with the Giants from 2015 to 2017. Chiefs general manager Brett Veach told Chiefs.com Thursday that fans will like what they see with Spagnuolo as the defensive coordinator.A
